Biography
Ayse Gilbert’s personal landscapes focus on the fresh, still unspoiled character of Alaska while still subtly embracing architecture. With these landscapes, Ayse has revisited the “Plein-aire” style of painting of the early 20th century, extremely popular of the West Coast, and also with Alaskan artists like Lambert and Laurence.

Ayse’s art captures the ephemeral quality of northern light. In summer, the cool blue light provides for the intense purple shadows and brilliant colored flowers. In winter, the low angle of the sun paints the snow unreal pinks and violets while lighting the trees briefly in gold.

Ayse’s landscapes are worked both dark to light and light to dark and are crafted with both pencils and oil crayons.

In addition to her pastel landscapes, Ayse also creates beautiful stylized figures resembling icons, reverse painted on glass with rich jewel-like tones and metallic colors.

Ayse Gilbert has lived and traveled in Alaska for over 20 years. She currently lives in Anchorage with her husband Charles, and her exuberant son Otto.
