Saturday Afternoons Meet the Artists Jill Lerner & Liz Bowen Assorted Purses by Jill LernerJoin us on Saturday, November 8, from 1 to 3 p.m. to meet these two artists for the first of our Saturday Afternoon Series. Jill Lerner will have a collection of her handmade whimsical handbags, some trimmed with maribou. Also glass jewelry artist Liz Bowen will be in the gallery with a collection of her colorful fused glass jewelry.
Instructions for the Care of Glass Jewelry
Always put on glass jewelry while standing over a rug, as dropping glass on a hard surface could cause it to break.
Dangle earrings: Always wear the tiny rubber fasteners on the back of the wires so the earrings won’t slip out of the ears. Hang up dangle earrings after wearing.
Pins: Remember to remove glass pins from clothing after wearing, as they won’t survive the laundry or dry cleaners.

By following these few simple care instructions, you will enjoy your glass jewelry for years to come!
Glacier Glass
Since 1988, Glacier Glass has been made in Alaska by Anchorage born artist Liz Bowen. Liz draws on her inspiration of the beauty of Alaska, the native art of the Southeast, and the animals that she has encountered in her life in Alaska.

What is Glacier Glass?

Glacier Glass is made from semi-precious metal coated glass. The glass can have as many as twenty layers of semi-precious metals such as berylium, titanium, yitrium and many other types of metals. Many of these metals can be found in the tailings of glacier deposits in Alaska and around the world.

The glass is a high tech spin off from the space industry and is used in many technical applications. "Dichroic" means having more than one color. This "thin film physics" glass as it is known, is done in a furnace chamber with the glass fastened inside with a high vacuum producing pump. Everything inside the chamber is controlled by a computer. The vacuum machines can cost up to $250,000 each and to run one takes about $300 an hour in production cost! The result is a color shifting material that will change color (if coated on clear glass) if moved at a 45 degree angle. The glass can be worn and complement almost any color in today’s fashions.
