Personal Statement
Abstract art has often been described in such various ways as a universal visual language depicting the image of spirituality, a direct artistic expression of emotion, and a rejection of representation and the material world. For me, it is all of these definitions. It is also the pure exploration of media and the freedom to exist in the moment. It is the freedom to allow one gesture, one color to suggest the next without preconceived notions. I use the immediacy of the materials to make a visual language of gesture and color that will help me to convey a personal sensibility. At its best, this would mean creating work which will connect on an attitudinal level - where for that one moment, the viewer and I have become joined in such a way that we are able to share the same emotional space.
The Russian painter, Wailly Kandinsky stated: "The work of art is born of the artist in a mysterious and secret way. It exists and has power to create a spiritual atmosphere; and from this inner standpoint, one judges whether it is a good work of art or a bad one. If its "form" is bad, it means that the form is too feeble in meaning to call forth corresponding vibrations of the soul."
It is possible that through these "corresponding vibrations of the soul" darkness and obscurity will fade. Abstract painting in its highest form has the potential to illuminate. The act of painting in the abstract is, for me, both a spiritual and artistic journey.
